We already know that chiropractic care safe for women who are pregnant. Many women seek safe relief from back pain and symptoms that accompany pregnancy with chiropractic care. What many people do not realize is that chiropractic care may help those struggling with infertility.
Chiropractic and Infertility.
In my last post, I talked about nerve function and communication between the brain and the organs. Think of your brain as a computer. It determines both organ and cell function and it’s response to stimuli. The nervous system is the “telephone” through which your organs and cells receive information. Without interference, there is proper communication and the cells are able to respond appropriately. These messages can be impaired by spinal subluxations which occur when there are misalignments of one or more vertebrae. The nerve messages that initiate and sustain reproduction (or any vital function) may in turn be compromised. Both the severity of the subluxation and the length of time left uncorrected will determine the effects on the organs.
Not only is the nervous system feeding the reproductive organs, it is feeding the glands that control hormones. Hormone imbalance can impair reproductive health as well. While there are other culprits that can play into infertility, such as trauma and toxicity, proper nerve function is a vital component.
One of the major premises of chiropractic philosophy is that normal nerve function is essential to good health. The spinal cord, which transmits nerve impulses between the brain and the organs and tissues of the body is supported and protected by the spinal column. Vertebral misalignments or subluxations disturb normal nerve function. When nerve function is disturbed, dysfunction and disease may result. Chiropractic adjustments restore proper alignment to the vertebrae thereby supporting proper function to the nervous system. This promotes an increased state of health regardless of the presenting problem or complaint.
Being that chiropractors focus on the removal of subluxations and do not focus on symptoms, it is often in hind site that other benefits start to be uncovered. For example, many women suffering with infertility do not seek out chiropractic care. However, they may become pregnant (after years of infertility) while seeing a chiropractor for low back pain or headaches. Conception and delivery of a healthy baby can be a “side effect” of their wellness care (a positive side effect with no adverse reactions).
Dr. Clark provides a case study of a patient who came in for wellness care. She had previously taken infertility drugs and had multiple unsuccessful rounds of IVF. She stopped all medications after adopting a son. She then conceived naturally after ten months of wellness care.
